Jeudi 4/1

Thursday was probably the best day of skiing. No getting lost, no injuries, lovely powder and great piste conditions. Alex and I got separated from Tom and Will somehow and spent the day around the Grand Serre, Aravet and Cassa du Boeuf runs. The Aravet and Martinue Blue and Green runs back to the resort were pretty rock and we both struggled near the bottom. I decided one last attempt just as the lifts were closing and came down the black Cassa du Boeuf run - which was actually much less perilous than the rock easier runs. Jeudi ended in one big piss up - which was a little unplanned! We went to the Yeti bar, which had a diabolical Blues Brothers tribute band, followed by a trip to the old town, to a bar with banging tunes and free bar snacks!

Vendredi 5/1

I paid for my drunken insolence the night before by struggling all day today. Alex stayed on the bottom slopes for a lesson so Tom, Will and I went up Cassa du Boeuf, up Clot Gaultier over to Le Balme, skied to La Cucumelle and down to Monetier. What a fantastic run! We broke for lunch at Bachas, where we had the longest wait ever for a panini then went up the Cibout where there is an incredible run which is essentially one huge half pipe, with a sloping, mogul covered centre and steeply banked sides. Great fun! We then went up the L’Yret to the highest point in Serre Chevalier - 2830ft - and came back down toward the Frejus over a wide expanse of almost pristine powder. This was the hardest part of any day so far. It took real concentration not to fall over in the foot or more of soft snow; concentration which I didn’t have in my hungover state! Needless to say, I reached the foot of Le Bez, the run which finished at our hotel, covered in snow and bruises. The runs were starting to get into a real mess. Le Bez was heavily compacted sugar Crystals over ice - no ability to stop and bloody painful if you fall.

Samedi 6/1

Our last day on the slopes :-(

We did the run from the previous day again, but with Alex this time. We stopped at the top of La Cucumelle where there is a small jump. Will attempted some funky snowboard tricks while Tom and I filmed, capturing some great action shots. For the afternoon we headed over to the Grande Serre to go through the snow park - a dedicated area with jumps and grind rails etc. Will became the second casualty of the holiday - falling badly onto his shoulder off the first jump, tearing a ligament. So there we all were on the last evening - in Le Frog Bar - Will and I in plaster cast and sling! Such a lame bunch of skiers/boarders! We ended the holiday on a high - with a fantastic meal at a small restaurant in Le Bez. We had two Fondue, one traditional Cheese and one, a fondue of boiling fat and beef. Moreish, heart attack material with enough calories to make up for the whole week of exercise - perfect!
