Central America travel guide

Central America is a fascinating mix of vastly different countries, cultures and landscapes. It really is hard to believe how varied people are when crossing a border in Central America. From the Sombrero wearing Mexicans to the laid back black Caribbean style of Belize, the traditional purple mayan features of the guatemalans, and the strange jeans, white hats and western dress of Honduras. Central America has everything. Mountains, Volcanoes, long beautiful beaches, tropical rainforest and semi arid deserts.

Central America Facts (As of Feb 2010):

  • Countries: 8 make up the region: Belize, guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama
  • Languages: Mainly Spanish with English spoken only in Belize plus various indigenous languages eleswhere. Finding English speakers outside of the tourist areas is very difficult. Recommend learning some Spanish before arriving here.
  • Currency: Each country has its own but the US dollar is widely accepted in all countries. Change local currencies easily and cheaply at borders but once away from borders, changing anything but the major currencies can be difficult and expensive. Recommend using cash machines (which are widespread), however it is not always possible to use a debit/credit card.
  • Time Zone: Mainly GMT-6 but varies from GMT-7 to GMT-5 with Daylight saving
